A first trip as a couple: how to plan it
Couple trips almost always go wrong for the same three reasons, and none of them is the destination. Here they are, and how to avoid them.
The three causes of arguments
Pace (one wants to see everything, the other wants to rest), money (never having discussed how much you'll spend) and decisions (one person organises everything and then carries the blame if something goes wrong). Talking through all three before booking resolves most problems.
Discuss money before booking
It's awkward and it prevents a great deal. Agree a daily figure you're both comfortable with and decide how it's paid: split, one pays and you settle later, or a shared pot. Without that, every expensive meal becomes a tense conversation.
Share the decisions
Let one pick the destination and the other the accommodation. Or one the daily plans and the other where you eat. If one person organises alone, they carry the work and end up responsible for anything that goes wrong.
Plan lightly
One fixed plan a day and the rest open. First couple trips with a packed schedule are exhausting and leave no room for what you actually remember, which is usually the unplanned part.
Destinations that work well
Mid-sized walkable cities where you don't depend on a car or timetables: Porto, Lisbon, Prague, Budapest, Seville, Rome. All coverable on foot, with good food and plenty to do without booking.
Destinations that complicate things
Those requiring lots of driving, logistics or daily early starts. A mountain-route trip or an itinerary with five cities in seven days tests anyone. Save it for when you already know how you travel together.
Accept splitting up for a while
One wanting a museum and the other a café terrace isn't a problem, it's normal. Separating for three hours and meeting again improves the trip rather than spoiling it.
Length
For a first trip, three to five days. Long enough to enjoy, not so long that constant closeness wears if something doesn't click.
