Family holidays: destinations that actually work

Reviewed regularly · 9 min read

The right destination with kids is chosen on logistics, not scenery. These are the variables that actually decide whether the trip goes well.

The three rules

First: total door-to-door time matters more than distance. A two-hour flight plus three hours of driving is worse than a three-hour flight and a twenty-minute transfer. Second: the accommodation matters most, because with kids you spend far more hours there than planned. Third: under five, one destination per trip.

Menorca

Calm coves with no current, a small island and short distances. What to check: plenty of coves need a 15–20 minute walk through pine forest, so with a pushchair pick the drive-up ones before booking.

Costa de Almería

Warm water from May and wide beaches where kids have space. Warning: the lack of shade is a real problem with small children — always bring your own parasol.

Sierra de Gredos

Natural river pools, short trails and affordable rural houses two hours from Madrid. Works very well as a first taste of the mountains. Go midweek: July weekends fill up.

Porto

Compact city, food kids will eat and short journeys. The catch is the hills, which are hard work with a pushchair.

Costa de Tarragona

Shallow beaches, long promenades and a huge supply of family accommodation. It's about as convenient as Spain gets in terms of services.

Southern France, Languedoc

Within driving distance from northeast Spain, with very well-equipped campsites that solve the entertainment problem without leaving the site.

Sardinia

Clear, shallow water on the north coast. Needs more planning (ferry or flight plus car), so it pays off from ten days up.

What usually goes wrong

Meal times. Spain eats dinner at ten and half the world at seven. If your child eats at half seven, a destination where kitchens open at half eight is a daily source of conflict. Checking before booking saves a lot of grief.
