Cycle touring for beginners

Reviewed regularly · 8 min read

You don't need an expensive bike or great fitness. You need the right route and not to overload, which is where everyone fails first time.

What bike you need

Whichever you have, if it's in good condition. A mountain or hybrid bike with wide tyres is perfectly fine for greenways and tracks. What matters isn't the model but that it's been serviced: brakes, gears, oiled chain and decent tyres. Take it to a shop before setting off.

How many kilometres a day

To start, 40 to 60 kilometres a day on flat terrain. It sounds little and it isn't when you're carrying weight three days running. And watch the elevation, which as in hiking matters more than distance: 40 mountain kilometres are far harder than 70 on a greenway.

Carrying luggage

Never on your back: a rucksack wrecks your shoulders and backside within two hours. Rear panniers on a rack are the standard and most comfortable option. Split the weight between both sides and put heavy items low, near the axle.

Easy routes to start

Greenways are the best option: paths along former railway lines, traffic-free, with very gentle gradients thanks to their railway origins, and well signposted. Spain has an extensive network across almost every region. Riverside cycle paths and canal towpaths across Europe work just as well.

What to carry

A spare inner tube, tyre levers and a pump, and knowing how to change a tyre before you leave: that's the breakdown you'll have. A multitool, front and rear lights even in daylight, a helmet, plenty of water and sun cream. And waterproof covers for the panniers.

Where to sleep

Simple accommodation along the stages is easiest for a first time, and saves carrying a tent and sleeping bag. Many greenways have villages with rural guesthouses every few kilometres. Book ahead in season.

First-timer mistakes

Carrying too much. Planning stages fit for an experienced cyclist. Not servicing the bike. And not wearing padded shorts: the least glamorous item and the one that most determines whether you can sit on the saddle on day two.

How to prepare

Do two or three long rides in the preceding weeks, with the panniers loaded as you'll carry them. It's the only preparation needed and it prevents almost every surprise.
